Sally Dear-Healey is an independent scholar, author, and 2010 recipient of Robert Maynard Hutchins Award.  After graduating summa cum laude and Departmental Scholar from SUNY Potsdam, she completed her Masters and PhD in Sociology at Binghamton University, also earning a Graduate Certificate in Feminist Theory.  Although she has taught at various universities, more recently Dr. Dear-Healey was a Visiting Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Women’s Studies at SUNY Cortland.  While her broader research interests focus on family violence, women’s and family health, health activism, and parenting “differently,” Dr. Dear-Healey, who is the President of the NYS American Association of University Professors (AAUP), is also writing about issues related to academic freedom and integrity, especially as they relate to athletics and athletes and relationship violence.

Dear-Healey also volunteers as a family and community mediator. Committed to academic integrity and freedom, she was the recipient of the 2010 Robert Maynard Hutchens Award for her “courageous defense of academic integrity in collegiate sports.” She is currently writing a book about her experience at Binghamton University.  Dear-Healey is a member of the American Sociological Association, Sociologists for Women in Society, New York State Sociological Association, Motherhood Institute for Research and Community Involvement, Coalition for Improving Maternity Services, National Advocates for Pregnant Women, New York State Dispute Resolution Association, and the National Counsel for Family Relations. She is also a member of the American Association of University Professors (the AAUP promotes principles of academic freedom, tenure, and due process in higher education), the NYS AAUP, and chairs the NYS AAUP Committee on the Status of Women in the Academic Profession
